A little story about Echo

Echo trusts slowly after a hurt. A story about a sharp word, a little quiet — and a sorry.

Echo swimming in Emerald Waters with her eyes closed, listening
Echo swims through Emerald Waters, humming. Drip, swoosh, clink — she collects every sound. She makes a rhyme for Spike: “Hello, hello, ready to go?”
Echo looking sad, with a tear on her cheek
“Stop rhyming at me!” grumbles a voice. Spike. Echo’s song stops. Her eyes sting. A tear. Hurt feelings are loud — louder than any sound.
Echo listening to a seashell, eyes closed, smiling
Echo holds a shell to her ear. Shhh. Quiet first. Then Spike’s voice, softer now: “Sorry, Echo. I was grumpy. Rhyme again?” Echo smiles. “Okay. Ready for a beat.”

Your child can answer, point to a picture, or simply keep listening.

For grown-ups

Listening can be part of play. Leave room for pauses as well as replies.

In the books

Echo appears in Finley and the Shadow of Fear. Her own book is still to come.
