A little story about Spike

Spike’s anger comes out fast — and he’s learning what to do next. A story about hot cheeks and a fair restart.

Spike the crab standing tall and smiling
Race day at Ember Sands! Spike polishes his shell till it shines. He wants a fair race more than anything. “Ready, set…”
Spike frowning, with two puffs of steam above his eyes
“…swim!” But somebody zoomed off early. “NOT FAIR!” Spike’s cheeks get hot. Steam puffs from his head. His eyes squint. His whole body is angry.
Spike standing tall and smiling, claws raised with little click marks
Hot cheeks, click-clack claws — Spike knows those signs. He stops. Squeeze. Let go. Blow it slow. The hot gets smaller. Click, click: “Ready… set… fair this time!”

Your child can answer, point to a picture, or simply keep listening.

For grown-ups

Stay with the story moment. An invitation about Spike does not need to become a test. Spike notices the signs in his own body before he stops — the story shows it, so nobody has to explain it.
